On the last Wednesday of the month of Safar, which is the second month in the Islamic calendar, is known as Akhiri Chahar Shambah. In Persian, “akhiri” means ‘the last’ and “Chahar Shambah” means Wednesday in both Arabic and Persian.
The day of Akhiri Chahar Shambah is observed to commemorate the recovery of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) from his last illness. Although he initially experienced some relief and bathed, his condition worsened, and he passed away shortly after.
The exact date of Akhiri Chahar Shambah is difficult to determine due to differing opinions regarding the Prophet’s date of passing. However, most biographers believe that the Prophet fell ill on the 18th of Safar and remained sick for 13 days.
In many Muslim countries including Pakistan, India and Bangladesh observe the day of Ashura with great solemnity, even though it is an optional Muslim holiday in the country.
Some traditions include writing verses of the Holy Quran, known as the Seven Salams, with ink made from saffron water. After writing, the ‘ink’ is washed off and then consumed as a charm against evil. During the Mughal period, a grand durbar was organized at the Delhi Fort, where the emperor, princes, and nobles participated in special arrangements for the occasion.
Meanwhile, it’s important to mention that Wahabis do not celebrate this day.
