Linked with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Islamic Cairo, it holds the distinction of being Egypt’s oldest university granting degrees and is highly regarded for its Islamic learning programs.

Apart from its role in higher education, Al-Azhar administers a national network of schools attended by approximately two million students. The university is associated with over 4,000 teaching institutions in Egypt, as of 1996.

Al-Azhar’s library is considered the second most important in Egypt, following the Egyptian National Library and Archives. In May 2005, Al-Azhar, in collaboration with the IT Education Project (ITEP) in Dubai, initiated the H.H. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum project to digitize and publish Al-Azhar’s valuable manuscripts online, known as the “Al-Azhar Online Project.” The long-term aim is to provide online access to the library’s extensive collection of rare manuscripts, comprising around seven million pages of material.
