Hazrat Shaikh Salim Chishti (1418-1572) stands out as one of the renowned Sufi saints of the Chishti Order in India. Descendant of the esteemed Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti, whose tomb is located in Ajmer, Rajasthan, Salim Chisti left a lasting legacy.

Fathehpur city, located 40km from Agra, was established by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in tribute to the Saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, in Sikri village. Emperor Akbar’s visit to Sikri was motivated by his quest to seek the blessings of the saint for a son, after all other attempts had failed. The Sufi saint, who was both Emperor Akbar’s advisor and mentor, foretold that the king would have three sons. This prophecy came to fruition, leading to Akbar naming his son Jahangir as Salim in honor of the saint, who also played a role in raising the young prince.

In 1571, the saint, Hazrat Shaikh Salim Chishti passed away. In order to honor the saint’s memory, Akbar built a beautiful mosque in the complex of Sikri, surrounded by palaces, courts, baths, and gardens. The unique carvings on the white marble mausoleum of Sheikh Salim Chishti give it an ethereal quality.
