“No one was ever given more worldly power and prestige than Sulayman (as).

And with all of this he could only say “al Hamdulillah”. A certain saint once left his shaykh and traveled to a far land where he attained illumination and became adorned with the radiance of Allah’s light. He was granted a prestigious position with the king of the land and became exceedingly wealthy.

Overwhelmed at Allah’s bounty, he wrote to his shaykh asking, what more he could say than “al hamdulillah” to thank Allah?

His shaykh replied that, no amount of wealth could surpass the value of al hamdulillah. Indeed a person who says al hamdulillah, should be aware that he has offered the highest form of gratitude expected of him. This is thanking Allah by the tongue.

The second form of gratitude is thanking Allah through righteous deeds by spending wealth in the cause of Allah. It is incumbent upon every Muslim to spend of his wealth for pious ends. For example, the Muslim with means should be striving to give to the disadvantaged, feed the poor, shelter the orphans and help build mosques and schools.

Thirdly, a person may also show gratitude through good manners (adab). Termed “the gratitude of those who have witnessed (God’s Oneness and Presence), good behavior is acknowledging the Beautiful Countenance of Allah by constantly witnessing and praising Him. Allah is a King possessed of incomparable, absolute Beauty, Magnificence, Love, and Omnipotence. To Him belong all the most beautiful Names and Attributes.

He does not love anyone so much as him, who “sees” Him, and none but the gnostics (arif billah)- “those who Know Allah”-are seeing Him. They are the knowledgeworthy saints, for they observe His Beauty and have thus become the grateful ones among us.

May Allah put us among them and allow us to give abundant thanks to Him”.
