The city Karbala located in southern Iraq, holds great historical and religious significance for both, Sunni and Shia Muslims. It is situated about 100 kilometers southwest of Baghdad, the capital city of Iraq.

Karbala is a sacred city that embodies the values of courage, sacrifice, and the pursuit of justice. Its historical and religious significance make it a revered destination for Shia Muslims, who flock to the city to honor the memory of Imam Hussein (عليه السلام) and his companions.

Shia Muslims’ major pilgrimage site the Karbala, particularly during the months of Muharram and Safar. The city welcomes millions of visitors from around the world, who come to pay their respects to Imam Hussein (عليه السلام) and his companions. The pilgrimage is known as the “Ziyarat” or “Arba’een,” which commemorates the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Karbala was a small town in the 7th century. The Battle of Karbala took place in 680 CE. The battle was a pivotal moment in Islamic history, marking the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali (عليه السلام), the youngest grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Hussein’s rebellion against the tyrannical rule of Yazid ibn Muawiyah, the Umayyad caliph, ended in tragedy when he and his companions were brutally massacred.

For Shia Muslims, Karbala represents the ultimate symbol of resistance against oppression, courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and the unwavering commitment to justice and righteousness. The martyrdom of Imam Hussain as and his companions is seen as a sacrifice that has inspired generations to stand up against tyranny and fight for their rights.
