During a religious event, Kolkata Mayor and TMC minister Firhad Hakim made remarks that stirred up a political dispute in the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday, July 31. BJP legislators demanded an apology. They mentioned It as a communal speech and threatened to boycott him.

In response, Hakim stated that remarks made outside the Assembly should not be debated inside the assembly, and he made it clear that he would not accept secularism lessons from the BJP.

Indian Express reported, during the ‘All India Quran Competition’ held earlier this month in Kolkata, Hakim uttered thus in his speech.

During the Question Hour, when Hakim stood up to address a question, BJP MLAs, led by chief whip Shankar Ghosh, demanded that he apologize and retract his statement.

Hakim stated that this issue should not be brought up in the assembly because the incident did not occur within the Assembly.

This led to BJP MLAs staging a walkout. Additionally, Hakim emphasized, “I have always been a secular individual. Any remarks I made at a religious event are unrelated to politics and society. I am committed to remaining secular and non-communal for the rest of my life. I do not require lessons in secularism from the BJP.”
