The Ministry of Health and Wellness is gearing up to organize an exposition later this year, with the aim of introducing high-school students to various career opportunities. These career paths will be eligible for scholarships under the Dr. Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship and Development Fund.
The Government plans to allocate $2.5 billion to the Fund over the next five years, amounting to $500 million each year.
Dr. Barry Wint, who served as Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, passed away in 2006.
The scholarships will be available to Jamaican students pursuing studies in areas such as Nursing, Medicine, Public Health, Medical Technology, Epidemiology, Health Records Management, Hospital/Healthcare Management, Information Systems for Health, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Health Economics.
Speaking at Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Portfolio Minister Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, emphasized the importance of familiarizing interested Jamaicans with various healthcare disciplines.
Dr. Tufton highlighted the need for specialization within nursing, citing specific areas such as nephrology, operating theatre nursing, critical care, and intensive care unit (ICU) services. He stressed that the demand for these specialized nursing categories is high, both locally and globally.
The scholarship is open to graduate and postgraduate students, with recipients expected to be bonded to work within the public health system for a certain period.
For further details, additional information will be provided through the media and on the Ministry’s website (www.moh.gov.jm) by July 2024.
