The MOScholars tax credit program in Missouri has received significant contributions from major donors, including UnitedHealth Group Inc., Lamar Hunt Jr. and his family, and other notable figures.
UnitedHealth Group Inc. donated $2 million last year and pledged $3.5 million this year, while Lamar Hunt Jr. and his wife reserved $800,000 in tax credits last year. MOScholars allows taxpayers to fund scholarships for private, parochial, and homeschooled students through six educational assistance organizations.
Treasurer Vivek Malek noted a promising start to this year’s donations, exceeding last year’s figures at this time.
Some big donors include Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield, who gave $1 million, and David Steward, who donated $500,000. Charter Communications, Hobby Lobby Stores, and Herzog Enterprises also made substantial contributions. Former Missouri Gov. John Ashcroft and his wife were among the donors in 2023.
The Treasurer’s office has focused on fundraising from both individuals and corporations, with efforts to raise awareness of the program among larger corporate entities. State Rep. Phil Christofanelli mentioned outreach to corporations through accountant associations to increase participation in the program.
