Pope Francis is all set to lead an interfaith meeting at a mosque in Indonesia during his upcoming September visit, marking his longest and most challenging foreign trip yet. The Vatican has unveiled the detailed itinerary for his journey, encompassing Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and Singapore. This demonstrates the 87-year-old pontiff’s steadfast determination and energy, despite his health battles and increasing reliance on a wheelchair.
The packed schedule includes protocol visits, diplomatic speeches, and public Masses, signaling that Pope Francis shows no signs of slowing down. He is anticipated to preside over an interfaith gathering at Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, which will be attended by leaders of the six recognized and protected religions in Indonesia. Additionally, he is expected to traverse the “Tunnel of Friendship,” linking the grand mosque to the neo-Gothic Our Lady of The Assumption Cathedral.
Originally scheduled for 2020, the trip was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At a duration of 11 full days, it surpasses all previous trips undertaken during Francis’ 11-year papacy. This significant journey will take him to Indonesia, the world’s most populous predominantly Muslim nation, as well as to East Timor, a country where the Catholic Church holds substantial influence.
Following his return to Rome in mid-September, Pope Francis will embark on a four-day visit to Belgium and Luxembourg, marking his only other confirmed foreign trip for the year.
