The origin of the term ‘Langar’ and its practice

The term ‘Langar’, is derived from the Persian language. The concept of langar was considered a meritorious deed. Langars allowed the needy to freely eat to their fill. In fact, Khawaja Nasir ud Din Chirag praised the langars at old Delhi, during the rule of Allaudin Khalji. Langars existed in the early 14th century at Delhi. So the Sikh community borrows the practice of Langar from the Persian – Islamic Sufi practice.
