Who is called a Shaykh (mursyid) or makes someone a Shaykh? It is not because he has the miracles he does, its is not about the “spiritual” experience he is aiming for, or anything else, but the Shaykh should have permission from Allah and rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam and the transmission of knowledge (isnad) that he got it through the previous Shaykh. The Idhin (permission) and the sanad must be owned before the other criteria to confirm a shaykh whether he is authorized or not. It would be better for years to sit together with a Shaykh with permission and sanad even without feeling any spiritual experience, rather than feeling seeing light and vision with a Shaykh who has no permission and transmission sanad.

This is understood by all Sufi orders, so that guarding from falsehood and corruption, tassawuf is with idhin or permission. This is the essence of the spiritual bond between the living mursyid and the previous one. This is like a machine that moves the tariqa and the fuqara in their ongoing process to face his own nafs towards enlightenment and purification. Without idhin and sanad, you will never have a spiritual teacher or a real tariqa.
