Some of the Ottoman Sultans used to have an extremely beautiful practise which showed their adab (Respect) for Madinah.
For many centuries, the noble Masjid of Rasūlullāh ﷺ and his pure chambers would be cleaned with brushes made from peacock and ostrich feathers. After a lengthy period of being used to wipe the dust and clean the floor- the feathers would then be brought to the Sultans.
They would wipe the feathers on their eyes and upon their faces, and wear it on top of their turbans.
The Sultans would then tearfully say, ‘We are servants and khadims of Rasūlullāh ﷺ. We are not worthy of the dust of his blessed city!’ The kings of the world take honour in wearing diamonds and rubies on their crowns.
The Muslim rulers would take honour in wearing feathers which touched the earth of his noble city.
